Book a holiday home in the Dodecanese for an unforgettable stay
The Dodecanese, which literally means '12 Islands', actually comprise over 150 small islands and 12 large islands loacted in the Agean Sea off the coast of Greece. Families with children can choose from a range of Dodecanese holiday homes, holiday apartments, holiday rentals and holiday houses.
The history of the islands
Inhabited since the prehistoric times, the islands have been successively ruled by the Minoans, the Mycenaean Greeks, the Dorians, the Persians, the Athenians and even Alexander the Great. The capital, Rhodes, quickly gained in maritime, commercial and cultural significance as a consequence. Saint Paul and Saint John visited the islands in the 1st century BC and spread Christianity among the islanders. It was on one of these islands that Christ's disciple, John the Theologian wrote the "Book of Revelations". Following World War II, the islands became a British military protectorate. With each of the invaders leaving their indelible stamp since prehistoric times, it's little wonder that the Dodecanese rate highly among discerning tourists.
The Dodecanese today
Rhodes and Kos are the two major cosmopolitan islands where most travellers make an obligatory stop at the many holiday houses, holiday apartments, holiday rentals and holiday homes. Medieval Rhodes delights with its Old City, the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master. History students shouldn't miss the Acropolis of Líndos and Lalissós and ancient Kámiros, all influential cities in their time. Kos is best known for the plane tree where Hippocrates once sat with his students. The island of Kalymnos is renowned for its thyme honey, homemade mizithra cheese, tangerines and seafood. Meanwhile in Telendos, you can rent equipment for wind surfing, kayaking and spear fishing. Other islands in the Dodecanese include Karpathos, Tilos, Arki & Marathi, Kassos, Leros and Patmos (of St. John fame). Patmos is known as the “island of the Apocalypse” or “the Jerusalem of the Aegean”. The Sound and Light Festival, which is held in Spring, is a surreal extravaganza eagerly anticipated by visitors and islanders alike.
